Watch Out for E-mail From United Parcel Service!

on July 24th, 2008

Watch out for e-mails that appear to be from United Parcel Service (UPS). These fake e-mails have a zip file attached to them. Inside of the zip file is what looks like an invoice, but it’s actually a Trojan.

Watch for an e-mail from United Parcel Service with the subject like: UPS Tracking Number xxxxxxxx.

If you have opened this e-mail already, you should be OK as long as you did not open the “invoice” inside the zip file.

If you did open the “invoice”, your system may be infected. If you suspect your computer may be infected, give us a call. We can remote into your system and clean it for you.

How to Edit Pictures

on July 8th, 2008

If you have a digital camera, some of your pictures may need a little doctoring. Using a tool that comes with Microsoft Office, you can remove red eye, crop, adjust color, brightness, and contrast, and more. The tool I’m talking about is Microsoft Office Picture Manager. It comes with Office versions 2003 and 2007. If you have an older version of Office, you won’t have Picture Manager, but you can still make similar edits using a free tool from Google called Picasa. You can download Picasa for free at picasa.google.com.

To edit a picture using Picture Manager, first find the picture on your computer. Pictures are usually in the My Pictures folder under My Documents. Depending on how your computer is set up, you might be able to right-click on the picture and choose edit form the pop-up menu. If that doesn’t bring up Picture Manager, you can, instead, right-click on the picture, choose “Open With” from the pop-up menu, and then choose “Microsoft Office Picture Manager” from the list. Another way to open it is to click on “Start” then “All Programs” then “Microsoft Office” then “Microsoft Office Tools” and then on “Microsoft Office Picture Manager” You can then open the picture from Picture Manager.

Once you have a picture open in Picture manager, click on the “Edit Pictures” button at the top. Now over on the right are all of the options for editing the picture. I won’t go over all of them, but here’s how to use the top 3.

If a picture isn’t right-side up, click on “Rotate and Flip” to correct it. Generally, you can rotate it right or left until it looks correct.

If a picture isn’t centered or has a lot of empty space around the outside, then you can crop the picture using the crop function. Just click on crop and some black lines will appear around the picture. You can click and drag the black lines to make the picture look the way you want.

And finally, if the devil has possessed one of your photographic subjects (red eye), then you can exercise the devil from them by using the red eye removal tool. Click on “Red Eye Removal”. Your mouse pointer will now be a circle. Carefully click on each red eye. When you have click once on each red eye, click OK to remove the red eyes.
